Mystery Shopping

Companies throughout the United States and Canada are always seeking new mystery shoppers to provide them with the evaluation data they need. They pay secret shoppers (aka secret shoppers) to go to stores and restaurants you probably frequent already to shop or eat for free! After the shop, mystery shoppers then send back a detailed report of their experience during the shop. Companies use this information to make sure the service is as it should be as well as to find any problems with their business.

Males and females, people of all ages and in all areas are needed to become mystery shoppers. As there are hundreds of companies requiring this feedback information, there are usually more jobs available than shoppers and as such, companies are always looking
for new recruits. If you are reliable, can follow instructions and accurately describe your experience while on the shop, you too can become a secret shopper!

Mystery shopping has been great for a lot of people seeking extra income on the side or for people who have busy or erratic schedules. One of the great aspects of mystery shopping is that jobs are usually very flexible. Once registered with a company, you have the option of only accepting the jobs you want and are under no obligation to accept any. Choose jobs that best fit your schedule or interest you the most. Mystery shopping is ideal for stay at home moms, retirees, college students and many others who lead busy lives.

Pay schedules for mystery shopping jobs vary, but can range from $20 - $50 an hour. Some jobs only take 10-15 minutes of your time and would pay from $10 - $15 or more. Many shoppers schedule multiple jobs on the same day and in this way, can complete several jobs in one trip. Many find the compensation more than fair, as jobs are relatively simple and straight-forward provided shoppers are organized and responsible. On top of being paid for your time, mystery shoppers also get reimbursed for expenses on the job. Imagine not only being paid, but keeping what you buy while shopping and eating for free!

Typical Retail Shop

A typical retail store shop may require you to remember a couple of key points to look for while shopping. For instance, when you enter the store, did an employee greet you? Was he/she pleasant or seemed indifferent? Next, maybe you are to check to see if a particular display is up properly and make a mental note of this. Other things to look for are general cleanliness of the store. Are the shelves stocked properly and in an orderly fashion? How is foot traffic in the store during your visit? You are also to look for a certain product and make a purchase of that item. Do they have multiple sizes/versions available? Was it easy to find? While making the purchase, were you charged the correct price? These and many other concerns of this nature are what shoppers must take mental note of, and later report. Each job will have different criteria to look for and detailed instructions will be provided prior to your acceptance of that job. Typically, total time for a retail store shop can vary from about 5 – 15 minutes.

Typical Restaurant Shop

A typical restaurant shop may require you to remember a couple of key points to look for while eating at a restaurant. The shop usually begins as soon as you and your companion enter the restaurant. How long does it take for you to be seated? Is the restaurant busy? How would you rate your host’s attitude? When you do sit at your table, has the table been cleaned already or does someone clean it while you are seated? How long does it take for a server to get your order? How long does it take for you to receive your meal? How would you rate it’s appearance, freshness, and taste? After you leave the restaurant, you would then answer similar questions and write up your experience. Most restaurant shops not only reimburse the cost of your meal, but also that of your companion's. Typically, total time for a restaurant shop would be the length of your meal, which can vary from 30 minutes to an hour or more.

From THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Online Edition June 9, 2003:

"Cheers," she said, hoisting a frosty Corona with lime. Tanned and relaxed after playing a few holes, she finished up the beer and ate a cheeseburger. The golf and burgers were all part of the job, as were the strict instructions from her boss to 'consume at least one alcoholic beverage." That was her afternoon. Her morning was spent dress shopping, cashing a check at a bank, and looking at new cars. In the evening she ate dinner with a friend at a, "nice Italian restaurant." Everything she did was a paid job. She made about $300 that day. "Can you believe they call this work?" she asked. And what does this shopper make on a monthly basis? According to The Wall Street Journal, "she made nearly $7,000" the month before the article was written.

Work as much or as little as you want
As your own boss, you decide how much you want to work and when you want to work. Mystery shoppers are considered independent contractors, and as such, you decide which jobs you want to accept and which to decline. You are under no obligation to accept a job just because it is offered to you.

This flexibility makes mystery shopping a great source of income for stay-at-home moms or dads, college students, retirees, or any one else looking to earn money in their spare time. Accept and work as little as 1 job per week or as many as you can handle. Many mystery shoppers consistently earn several hundred a week working in their spare time, while others even earn up to several thousand a month working multiple mystery shop jobs. How much you want to work is always up to you.
